When Digital Impressions Are Used
Digital impressions are used any time a precise three-dimensional model of the teeth is needed for fabricating a restoration or appliance.
- Crown and bridge fabrication: the digital model is sent directly to the lab for a precise fit
- Clear aligner case submission (Invisalign, Spark, and similar systems)
- Custom night guard and mouth guard fabrication
- Any restoration requiring an accurate record of the teeth and bite relationship
The digital file can be transmitted to the lab immediately, reducing turnaround time and eliminating the risk of a physical impression being distorted or damaged in transit.
The Patient Experience
The scanning wand is moved slowly around the teeth, capturing thousands of data points per second to build a complete model. There is no material setting in the mouth, no waiting for putty to harden, and no uncomfortable tray to hold.
Patients with a strong gag reflex often find digital impressions significantly more comfortable than traditional ones. The scan takes only a few minutes.
