Call first. We keep time available for patients dealing with pain, and we will do our best to get you in the same day. Explaining your situation when you call helps us prepare for your appointment.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency
If you are in pain or have experienced a sudden dental problem, it likely qualifies. Common situations we treat on an emergency basis include:
- Severe tooth pain or a toothache that is not improving
- A broken or cracked tooth
- A lost crown or filling
- A knocked-out tooth
- A dental abscess: significant swelling, fever, or severe pain localized to a tooth or the jaw
- A chipped tooth that is affecting your bite or causing pain
What to Do Before You Arrive
Calling us is the first step. While you are waiting to come in, here is some general guidance for common situations:
Knocked-Out Tooth
Handle it by the crown, not the root. Keep it moist, either in milk or held between your cheek and gum. Call immediately. Time matters.
Broken Tooth
Rinse with warm water. Save any pieces if you can. Come in as soon as you are able.
Lost Crown
Call us. We may be able to re-cement it temporarily until you can come in for a full evaluation. Keep the crown if you have it.
A Note on Hours
Our emergency care is provided during regular business hours, Monday through Thursday. We are not an after-hours emergency clinic and cannot take calls outside of those hours.
If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, severe swelling that is affecting your airway or ability to swallow, or any situation that feels medically urgent, please go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. Dental pain can be severe, but some presentations require immediate medical attention that a dental office is not equipped to provide.
