Benefits
Digital X-rays offer meaningful improvements over traditional film X-rays for both the patient and the clinical team.
- Lower radiation exposure than traditional film X-rays
- Images are available on screen immediately, no waiting for film development
- Images can be enlarged, enhanced, and adjusted to improve diagnostic detail
- No chemical processing required
- Images can be sent electronically to specialists or other providers if needed
The ability to enhance and zoom an image on screen is practically significant. Small areas of concern can be examined more closely without additional X-rays.
When X-Rays Are Taken
X-rays are not taken at every visit. The decision is based on clinical need and patient history. New patients typically receive a full series of X-rays to give the practice a complete baseline picture of the dentition, bone levels, and any existing conditions.
For established patients, X-rays are taken as clinically indicated: when there is a specific concern, when prior X-rays suggest an area to monitor, or at the intervals appropriate for the patient's risk level. You will not be X-rayed on a schedule that ignores your individual history.
