When We Use It
CBCT imaging is used selectively, for cases where a three-dimensional view of the anatomy is necessary for accurate planning or diagnosis.
- Dental implant planning: assessing bone density, volume, and location of nerves to determine exact implant placement angle and depth
- All-On-X full-arch treatment planning
- Airway evaluation: Dr. Mark uses CBCT as part of the assessment for sleep-disordered breathing and oral appliance therapy cases
- Complex surgical extractions, including impacted teeth
- TMJ evaluation when a detailed view of the joint is needed
- Cases where bone structure is a factor in diagnosis or treatment design
Standard two-dimensional X-rays do not capture bone volume, depth, or the spatial relationship between structures in three dimensions. CBCT fills that gap for cases that require it.
Lower Radiation Than Medical CT
CBCT delivers significantly less radiation than a traditional medical CT scan. The scan is fast, takes only seconds, and is performed in the office. The patient stands or sits during the scan; there is no enclosure.
We use CBCT when the clinical need justifies it, not routinely. For standard restorative and preventative care, conventional digital X-rays remain the appropriate tool.
