Who Gets Fluoride Treatments
Professional fluoride treatments are most commonly applied to children and teenagers, whose developing enamel benefits most from the added protection. They are typically applied at regular cleaning appointments as part of routine preventative care.
Adults at elevated cavity risk also benefit. This includes patients with dry mouth, those taking medications that reduce saliva flow, patients who have had multiple recent cavities, and anyone with exposed root surfaces. The hygienist will assess whether professional fluoride is appropriate for you.
The Process
Professional fluoride is applied after cleaning as a gel, foam, or varnish. The application takes about a minute. Varnish is the most common form used today: it is painted directly onto the tooth surfaces and sets quickly on contact with saliva.
Patients are asked to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the treatment to allow the fluoride to absorb fully into the enamel. That is the entire process.
