Dental Fillings

When a tooth has decay, the decayed material is removed and the tooth is filled to restore its structure and prevent further breakdown. Musso Family Dentistry uses tooth-colored composite resin fillings.

Composite vs. Amalgam

Composite resin is the filling material we use by default. It is tooth-colored and bonds directly to the remaining tooth structure, which allows us to remove only the decayed portion and preserve more of the natural tooth. The result blends into the surrounding tooth and is not visible when you smile or speak.

Amalgam fillings, the traditional silver material, are still used in dentistry and have a long track record. We use composite as our standard, but if you have questions about filling material options, we are happy to discuss them at your appointment.

When a Filling Is Not Enough

A filling works well when decay is caught while the damage is still limited. When decay has spread significantly or compromised enough of the tooth structure that a filling cannot provide adequate support, a crown may be the right next step. If infection has reached the pulp inside the tooth, a root canal is typically needed before any restoration.

This is determined at the exam, with X-rays and a clinical evaluation. The goal is always to address the problem with the most conservative treatment that will hold up over time.
