At Musso Family Dentistry, our team of dentists, Dr. Mike and Mark Musso, along with Dr. Mark Waggoner, are pleased to help our patients in Garland, Texas, with all of your dental needs. What do you know about TMJ and how it affects your oral health?

The joint which connects your jaw to your skull is known as the temporomandibular joint. If it is somehow injured, it can cause pain known as TMJ syndrome. TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors such as chewing gum excessively, poor posture, stress, misalignment of the jaw, teeth grinding by day or night, tooth injury or injury to the jaw.

The result of TMJ on your health can include pain the joints of the jaw, clicking and popping of the jaw, pain in the ears, ear popping, dizziness or vertigo, headaches or migraines, sore or stiff jaw muscles, pain in your temple, and possibly the locking of your jaw.

So how do you find relief? You can place ice packs on the joint, try over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine, reduce stress, implement massages and stretches, avoid chewing gum and stick with soft foods until your jaws heal. Depending on the cause and severity of your TMJ, we may also recommend the following:

— A mouthguard or nightguard to alleviate teeth grinding, or bruxism.

— A dental splint, similar to a mouthguard to provide jaw relief.

— Medications such as muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, etc. which can help your jaw.

— Physical therapy which includes exercises for the jaw.

— Jaw surgery.
